Lessons in new-season style, direct from the States
Words by Laura Griffiths
With many designers showcasing both subtle and not-so-subtle references, it’s safe to say there is a distinctly American theme to many of the AW17 collections. From Americana icons of old to a fresh take on the classic collegiate style, designers including Yeezy and Coach are parading several allusions to the States down the runway.
And what better excuse than the Fourth of July celebrations to honour all things American? Step forward autumn’s top USA-inspired trends, the perfect start to your new-season shopping list…
No matter your age, September will always bring with it that new term feeling – and this year, we’re taking it literally. Learn from MSGM and throw a baseball jacket over your favourite summer dress, or incorporate sporty details into your corporate wear for perfect back-to-boardroom style, à la Calvin Klein. Looking to make the honours list? Invest in a splash of yellow: the colour of the summer is going nowhere.
Pretty is as pretty does, and while you may not be mild-mannered all the time, this season you can at least look the part. Little House on the Prairie may have ceased airing some decades ago, but this national treasure’s influence can still be felt: summer’s fixation on floral dresses shows no signs of changing with the weather. Still, a few choice accessories make them feel a whole lot fresher for the new season. Preen advocates tough leather boots, or copy Coach and juxtapose your dress with shearling and knitwear – a texture clash guaranteed to see you through to winter in warmth and style.
Not a sugar-sweet kind of girl? Go hell for leather with the most rebellious trend of the season. There’s a styling trick for all when it comes to the notorious biker gang: ease your way in via Isabel Marant’s floaty dress and corsetry combination, or make like Philosophy di Lorenzo Serafini ’s girls in a motorcycle jacket and jeans. Whichever route you choose, putting a little skin on show will break up the black and keep your look more chic than sinister.
Admittedly not one for everyday, AW17’s gowns are dripping in Golden Age elegance. Fluid silk floor-sweepers from Monse lend nonchalant opulence to any celebratory soiree, and Marchesa’s embroidered layers of tulle and chiffon are perfect if you want to take centre stage. Accessorise with breathtaking jewels (real or otherwise) and make the leap from mundane to megastar in one fell sweep.
Wall Street Chic
It may be nearly 30 years since Working Girl’s Melanie Griffith and Sigourney Weaver paved the way for power-dressing women everywhere, but their strong-shouldered silhouettes are back with more aplomb than ever. From tartan to tweed and all the plaid in between, a checked suit is the perfect addition to your workwear wardrobe. Look to Krizia and Alexander McQueen for formidable silhouettes that really mean business.
