The origins of Joseph Melchior Thimister are eclectic: He is Russian, French, Belgian, Orthodox, Catholic, Jewish – a mix that he bluntly calls ‘garbage’. After passing through Karl Lagerfeld and fashion house Jean Patou, he worked as a decorator before being named artistic director of Balenciaga. During those 5 and a half years he gave the brand a breath of fresh air, and in 1997 started his own label. The creations of Thimister posses a certain lightness and poetry which creates an elegance devoid of any vanity, rejuvenating the traditions of haute couture by using unconventional materials.
