Rob St John
'Weald' by Rob St John CD. Weald, the first LP by Rob St. John, is an Old English word from which the concept of a ‘wild’, a ‘wooded’, and a ‘dark, dangerous’ place in the landscape has emerged. This record reflects this multiple reading of a shifting physical and emotional landscape, where a host of meanings and histories underlie a palimpsest surface. Meanings emerge and drift away on gusting washes of sound, spiralling lyrics are open but rarely confessional; echoing a British, rural Dirty Three, Low, Bert Jansch or Phil Elverum. Store Recommendation: "Rob is an honorary Scotsman having lived in Edinburgh for some time and his roots are only given away in his deep Lancastrian tone."

Lancastrian Rob St John plays drawn-out and ghostly songs underpinned by the creaks and drones of the harmonium, musical saw, fiddle, skittering drums, analogue synth and field recordings. Backed by a talented cast of collaborators and co-conspirators he’s just released his first album ‘Weald’ on 12” LP through Edinburgh DIY label Song, By Toad.
