Martin Margiela was born in 1957 in Gent in Belgium. After graduation in 1980 he went on to assist Jean Paul Gaultier. Margiela was among a group of designers in Antwerp in the 1980's who caused a shift in fashion introducing deconstructive techniques which have had a lasting impact. Margiela has often introduced humour or subversive randomness into his designs such as the hoof shoe he introduced in 1992 and has since become his signature or the Barbie collection of 1994.
