Hailing from Ohio, the American band Devo formed in 1972. The classic line-up of the band consists of two sets of brothers, the Mothersbaughs and the Casales .The band name comes from their concept of 'de-evolution' - the idea that instead of continuing to evolve, mankind has actually begun to regress, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. Their often discordant pop songs have proven influential on subsequent popular music, particularly New Wave, industrial and alternative rock artists. After the band had a #14 Billboard hit with the single "Whip It", it has maintained a cult following. Their style has shifted between punk, art rock, post-punk and New Wave.
