Paul Smith’s modest beginnings in the world of fashion started with a menial job at a clothing warehouse in his native Nottingham when he was 16. His interest in fashion, art and style grew and by 1970 he had opened a shop selling his own designs among the collections. Smith’s taste proved popular with his contemporaries and in 1976 he showed his first menswear collection in Paris. Paul Smith now heads an empire of 12 sub-brands and he designs everything from womenswear to rugs and tea-sets. Smith’s aesthetic blends a very British sense of humour with his love of traditional English clothing and his signature multi-coloured stripe is famous the world over.
Founded in 1984 by Mark Werts, American Rag is known for stocking its shelves with the best in vintage finds and emerging design talent.
