    • About the store: Fargo originated as an independent record label, founded by Michel Pampelune, and operating throughout Europe since 2000. Today the company continues to sell various music related products, including a fine selection of CDs and vinyl, books, magazines, t-shirts, guitars, posters and original artwork. In 2010, Michel decided to open his perfect Indie record store in the heart of Paris, upholding the ethos that CD and vinyl is definitely not dead. As a regular Record Store Day partner, Fargo is lucky enough to receive most of the goodies released by US labels for the international day-long event, and throughout the rest of the year, the store sells releases from the labels they love along with suggestions made by customers - rather than paying attention to commercial buzz. Thanks to the passion and ambition of Michel, Fargo has evolved from a label, to a record store, to a magazine and most recently to a live music promoter, with hosted performances at Paris' club La Flêche d'Or, including Steve Earle & The Dukes, Alejandro Escovedo and Josh Rouse. For every show, a screen-printed poster and collector tickets are made especially, and sold exclusively from the Fargo store.

      Edinburgh, Scotland

      Genred stocked:
Scottish Indie, Indie, Metal, Punk and Classic Rock

    • About the store: Kevin Buckle opened Avalanche in a small shop next to Edinburgh university selling new independent releases and second hand vinyl in 1984. Always wanting to work for himself, and with a love for music, he named the shop after the Leonard Cohen song Avalanche, which was the first track on the Nick Cave album From Her To Eternity released that year. After a successful beginning it moved to a larger shop in the same street, then opened another shop in the city centre in the 1990's. In 2010, Avalanche moved to an even larger shop in Edinburgh's famous arts hub – Grassmarket, with Edinburgh Castle as a backdrop. The Avalanche space regularly holds events that include art exhibitions and film screenings, as well as in-store music performances - with a mixture of local, European and international artists. Bands who have played here range from British Sea Power to The Maccabees, along with Scottish bands Idlewild, The Twilight Sad and a host of others. Frightened Rabbit hold the record attendance with 500 people at last year's Record Store Day in-store event.
Avalanche supports a range of Scottish Indie artists and chooses a range of music based on quality rather than nationality. The store has been short-listed several times for Independent Retailer of the Year by Music Week, but the team is most proud of its international reputation for knowledge and customer service. Avalanche was one of the founding members of Record Store Day in the UK.

The store holds an international reputation for classic music, with a huge range of jazz, soul and funk titles - not to mention a great selection of key contemporary music. This includes Neo Soul singers from the American underground, Rock albums and Psyche from the 60s and 70s, obscure Country, French Pop, Avant Experimental music and thousands of examples of rare vinyl and CDs. • About the store: Lawrence Montgomery first opened Rise in 2007 in Cheltenham, England. After working in record retailing for five years he gathered a small amount of stock from friendly suppliers to open the store, and thanks to a flier that Christmas, Rise quickly established a reputation as a place where you could grab a bargain and speak to knowledgeable staff. After four years developing the business and maintaining a growing customer base with a superb range of music, as well as complementary book and DVD offers, Rise now has four locations with great teams of staff in Bristol, Cheltenham, Swindon and Worcester. The flagship store in Bristol opened in 2009 and has held gigs with some of the most exciting artists around today, including Laura Marling, The XX, Shabazz Palaces, Gruff Rhys and Josh T Pearson. In 2010, Rise won Music Week Retailer of the Year, along with several other local shop awards, and additionally launched its online store the following year. Rise aims to maintain a consistent quality, value and demand in the stock that it sells, as well as pushing less well-known artists, such as the Soul Jazz Krautrock compilation which sold over 250 copies.
