This week, Danish-born and London-based Tui Lin, Fashion Editor at cult fashion publication Pop as well as premium men’s magazine Arena Homme +, lets us in on her perfect holiday memories. Fantasising about her most wanted gift to unwrap this year, Tui recommends some time in the sun this festive season.
‘Christmas is my favourite holiday of the year. It far exceeds Easter, Halloween and even my own birthday combined. To me a proper Christmas involves a lot of snow, so the idea of going away to somewhere exotic is as wrong as tucking into surf and turf on Christmas day. However, since this summer in the UK never quite kicked off, my most wanted gift to unwrap this year is (controversially) a Christmas holiday in the sun. My destination of choice would be Filicudi in Italy where I once holidayed three years ago...
Having just graduated from university and spent the last year on my final project and dissertation, I was more than ready to go on holiday. My only criteria were plenty of sun and good food.
One of my best friends suggested we go to Filicudi, and the next thing I knew my three girlfriends and I arrived at the port of what seemed like Utopia. Holding suitcases armed with bikinis, sun dresses and suncream, we were ready to take over the island. After having travelled for more than 12 hours we arrived at the house and were immediately struck by the fragrant scent of figs. The house was surrounded by fig trees.
Over the next week we spent days swimming, snorkelling and eating ice cream. No phone calls, no worries and just pure bliss. My friend's uncle took us all out on boating trips with his friends, one of whom was the artist Maurizio Cattelan. It still makes me laugh when I think of Maurizio in a pair of red and blue dragon Speedos, resembling a Jeff Koons' lobster.
In the evenings we’d go to the harbour where a group of local women would cook and sell traditional local delicacies. These women were around 70 years old and the most stylish women you'd see, wearing 40’s floral tea dresses with matching headscarves, and they were practically running the town.
On our last day we walked to the highest point of the island to watch the sun go down. The sky was bathed in a sea of colours from bright yellow to deep golden orange and fuchsia pink – it was perfect. My friends and I always talk about going back, so hopefully this year will be the year.
If I was to put one thing on my Christmas list this year from farfetch.com I would choose the black Christopher Kane padded jacket. I like that the jacket isn't oversized and the wood print is discreet and very chic. A great classic.’
