Their sound may borrow heavily (and beautifully) from the past, but She And Him are truly a band of the digital age – one who put together their first album via email.
Geography was the reason - She is Zoe Deschanel (of television and movie fame) and Him is M.Ward (formerly of Monster Of Folk), so it makes sense that they’re based in Los Angeles and Portland respectively.
Bleached in the sun, soulful and heavily influenced by the likes of George Martin and Phil Spector, the duo’s sound has served them well through two albums (Volume 1 in 2008 and Volume 2 in 2010) and a celebrated record of classic Christmas hits. Zooey, better known as the spirited, sardonic indie heroine from 500 Days Of Summer and Elf, sings and plays the piano and ukulele, whilst M.Ward provides guitar, production, and backing vocals.
Steeped in sweet heartache and rousing melody, their songs have a dreamy, retro quality that make you want to dress the part. Their own attire is of the quirky persuasion, the pair perennially look like they’re wearing vintage pieces, even if they’re not.
Zooey favours doll-like dresses, collared blouses and splashes of colour, girly with undercurrents of preppy, whilst M.Ward’s style is more enigmatic – relaxed, all-American shirts and jeans that could be from any era.
Volume 3 is set to land in a couple of weeks, a mixture of their own original tracks and signature catchy Sixties covers, which gives us just enough time to find the perfect sartorial accompaniment!
