The Mystery of P.A.M

P.A.M's latest campaign, photography by Peter Sutherland

When quirky Milan boutique WOK announced that they were turning their focus to menswear we knew they must have some pretty exciting pieces in the pipeline. Having always been involved in art-related collaborations, and a love of graphical prints only growing by the day, the store’s owners Federica Zambon and Simona Citarella explained that experimental and contemporary menswear now seemed the most natural fit for WOK.

One such example which has got the Italian duo particularly excited is cult Australian label P.A.M (Perks and Mini in its full form), long beloved of our stylish friends Down Under and in the Far East, and fast gaining kudos in Europe and America too.
Founded in Melbourne by artist/designer couple Misha Hollenbach and Shauna T back in 2000, by its own admission seeks to ‘inject art into fashion’, and has an emphasis on ambitious graphics. Having already racked up collaborations with Bless and Undercover, P.A.M’s solo venture for Autumn/Winter 12 collection is titled ‘The High Life’ and looks to the psychedelic – if not so much in colours as in spirit.

When explaining the inspiration behind the collection, the designers talk at length about figures like muscian Donovan, and the writer Igor Cassini and their penchant for smoking banana peels and ganja as a means of mind-expansion, before concluding  ‘Forthwith, a collection of chessboards, the obligatory celebration of pschoanalysis and psychedelics, psychaoactive wear, a new collection from Perks And Mini, entitled the HighLife.

Which is pretty epic stuff. The pieces themselves, however, are slick, modern and wearable, think chinos, classic knits and t-shirts given a flash of the extraordinary by the accompaniment of garments in progressive materials and effects (transparent rubber, for instance).  Perfect for the easy fashion fan with a daring streak.
