Johnny Depp just celebrated his 39th birthday, and as we head into menswear week, we decided to look at a man who has spent the last three decades eschewing trends in favour of choosing his own sartorial path - with mixed results. Some were good, some were bad, and some were purposely ugly. We round up Depp's most memorable looks..

Depp made his mark as a teen heartthrob in
21 Jump Street. He never liked this. But is that really an excuse for this caricature of bad bod attire?

It could be Depp. It could be Alex James from Blur. We don't know. But we like this simple look of suede jacket and black tee.

Johnny and Winona were one of the grunge generation's most beloved couples. They also really brought out each others eccentricities and touch of gothicness when it came to getting dressed.

Depp moved onto British supermodel Kate Moss after Winona dumped him, and they made an even more beautiful couple. Although it started a period in Depp's life where he seemed to only wear leather jackets and not wash his hair. But with the supernaturally stylish Kate on his arm, it somehow made sartorial sense.

Blockbuster
Pirates of the Caribbean was what finally turned Johnny into box office gold (he was even nominated for an Oscar) and Jack Sparrow is certainly one of the actor's finest creations. But did he really need to start dressing like him in real life too? No, is the answer to that question, as demonstrated here, at one of the Disneyland premieres.

And here's Mr Depp as we really love him, smartened up in a sharp suit, but with just enough of his hippy-ish quirks on display to stop him looking like every other A-lister. A man that handsome in a well-cut suit is always going to make a big impression but those Harry Potter-esque glasses and unusual tie give him a little something extra. And of course the addition of chic French actress Vanessa Paradis is always a welcome one. We do hope the rumours about those two calling it quits are false. We love them both.
