People

"Music is incredibly inspirational to me and naturally influences what I do and always has done. I love how music has the power to touch our senses, harness our emotions, evoke past memories and create identifiable new ones."
My musical taste really varies but I love atmospheric and melancholic music such as
Portishead, Cocteau Twins, Trailer Trash Tracys, Warpaint, White Hinterland, Oh Land,
Cat Power, Elizabeth Frasier, Massive Attack, Burial, Trentmøller and Flying Lotus. And then Sade, Sia, Tori Amos, Jill Scott, Erykah Badu and Nineties RnB…the list goes on!
Since launching my label in 2007, I’ve produced powerful collections for strong women, which has led me into the music industry. I created a custom made ‘Spine Dress’ especially for Janet Jackson, constructed from over 400 individual panels. I also designed the outfits for Florence and The Machine's Drumming music video, which included a body-con leather body suit which gave way to transparent wing-like sleeves that glided through the air. Florence also wore my velvet cat-suit in her Cosmic Love music video. My other clients and collaborators in the music world include; Natasha Khan (Bat for Lashes), Roisin Murphy, Debbie Harry, Alison Mosshart, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Alison Goldfrapp, The xx, Skin of Skunk Anansie, Beth Ditto, Jessie J, and Marina and the Diamonds.

The fashion and music worlds are very intertwined, and music is one of the strongest forms of self-expression. Design can be so transient, and due to the dynamics of the fashion industry it can be very short lived, so working with music enables not only for design to be communicated through the artist, but it’s also immortalised in a video or photograph.
I travelled to Iceland to see Bjork play which absolutely took my breath away.
Strong women that have a certain confidence, attitude and own everything they are, do and say – with conviction, such as; Alison Mosshart from The Kills, Grace Jones, PJ Harvey and Patti Smith.
I would love to work with icons like Björk, Grace Jones, Beyonce or Madonna and create innovative, unique custom made pieces for big scale shows and videos, but I also plan to continue working with new emerging talents from the beginning, as it's an exciting journey to take with artists, carefully developing the DNA that threads through their music and the world surrounding it.

Catherine's voice is ethereal yet powerful, and is entirely captivating with the sounds that multi-instrumentalist Bob creates. They’re not only incredibly talented but also very genuine and humble people. Not long ago, they were signed by major record label Polydor and are supporting Florence and the Machine on her tour at Alexandra Palace in London this year.
I collaborated with photographer Rankin on a video for my brand, and whilst I was searching for the perfect music to accompany it, I came across them on the internet and it absolutely blew my mind, so I immediately decided to use their track Drive as it was absolutely perfect. The video opened my S/S 11 catwalk show at London Fashion Week and was played on an 8-foot wide screen before the models came out onto the catwalk. I invited Alpines duo Catherine Pockson and Bob Matthews to the show and it was backstage that I first met them.
Catherine has a background in art so she has a very defined aesthetic and is very knowledgeable on the creative industries, so I think this is why they have such a specific
look that they have successfully translated through the Alpines world they are building.
I recently went to Paris and saw them perform at David Lynch's new club, Silencio. It was a very intimate performance where they played songs from both their albums, the second of which is released this month.
Whimsical electro-pop
I was introduced to Colette Thurlow and Hannah Thurlow from 2:54 after they played last year's Field Day festival in London.
I’m obsessed with their song Ghost Tonight. Front-woman Caroline Polachek's soulful vocals are so beautiful and sound like an absolute dream. It's not out yet but you can see them perform it here
Glacial Pop
I have their new Scarlet EP on repeat daily. I love the heavy atmospheric sound created by driving guitars and emotive vocals.
They are currently touring, so if you're quick you can probably get hold of tickets to see them for yourself.
They’re currently supporting The Big Pink on tour around the UK.
Creep is made up of Brooklyn based duo Lauren Dillard and Lauren Flax. I spend a lot of
time in New York and we have a lot of mutual friends.
Whilst in a store in New York I heard this incredible atmospheric music playing, so I asked the shop assistant to write the name of the artist and the track down for me – it was Touch by Holy Other.
Dark night-pop electronica.
Atmospheric, ghostly electronics.
Their new track featuring Holly Miranda, Animals is amazing, and the video is just as incredible as the music.
The haunting ghostly vocals that overlap and glide over the deep thundering bass line.
No one really knows what Holy Other looks like. Every live performance he is concealed behind a large hood or mask as to not reveal his identity, which is interesting and very much a part of the vision and aesthetic of this producer. Holy Other is signed with Tri Angle records which also represents artists Balam Acab and oOoOO and will be playing at the Tri Angle showcase in February.
I love how Creep created their gothic lingering sound by eclectically by fusing Nineties RnB and pop-influenced vocals laid over darky electronic mixed beats, often reminiscent of the early sounds of Massive Attack and Portishead. Plus, I love their almost-all-black aesthetic.
