In 1977, Michael Dovan left his job as a biologist, his band and his home state of New York to join the sunny coast of Los Angeles and explore opportunity. Once in town, Dovan opened up No Problem, his own shop with a great location on Hollywood Boulevard, but with little to sell. "In the beginning there was more merchandise in the window than in the store," jokes Dovan. "We had low funds and it took a while to get into the business because we didn't know anything about the business, but I learned fast." Five years later, Dovan was able to flip the shop, renaming it Traffic and replacing his low-tier, domestic merchandise with up-and-coming designers and established names from runways over seas. Traffic quickly became a go-to source for a clientele that included celebrities living in the nearby hills, rockers who frequented the boulevard's club circuit and a discerning crowd of shoppers who appreciated fine wares and Dovan's unique outlook on fashion.

By 1984, Dovan had opened up his second store in the Beverly Center, followed by a third at Sunset Plaza. Today, with over 30 years in the business, Dovan remains a leader in bringing international fashion to Los Angeles. "We carry everything from Paul Smith to Alexander McQueen to Kris Van Assche," he says, explaining further that while he might carry the same lines as other boutiques, his focus is to bring innovative pieces to Traffic.  "We don't carry all the same merchandise, we offer different interpretations of the line and items that make a person stand out in a crowd." But that doesn't mean Dovan and his team of buyers shy from the basics. Amidst the forward silhouettes and innovative embellishments, his clientele will also find everyday favorites that can be worked into both edgy and casual looks.

Dovan also makes a point to introduce new names to his line up each season, which not only lures shoppers back looking for the next great find, it also keeps Dovan up to date on emerging talent and trends. "I think it's extremely important to work with and give new designers a chance," he says. "Always give them a chance to grow, and help them too." And this spring will be no different. As farfetch.com begins receiving shipments full of styles fit for warmer weather, we know this season will be full of exciting pieces from designers both big and small
