The new TEN Nadir Tejani X Primitive

Summer usually sees something of a lull in the fashion calendar, wrapping up Spring/Summer and trying not to jump into Autumn/Winter too early. Sure, there are bits and pieces, but mostly everyone is waiting for the excitement of September, with its high octane Fashion Weeks and finally the go ahead to start showing off those new season clothes.

But like we said, there are style bright spots to help get you through and once such glimmer came last night, with Primitive London’s latest event, where the avant-garde Dalston store unveiled their newly renovated shop and gallery to coincide with the launch of their latest sartorial collaboration, with menswear designer Nadir Tejani, resulting in the collection TEN Nadir Tejani X Primitive.

The Primitive London space

Housed under a couple of atmospheric looking railway arches in London’s East End, Primitive used to be clearly divided into two spaces – the shop and the gallery. Now the whole place is a hybrid, with the gallery area now displaying the more directional, experimental fashion pieces and the more wearable collections in the traditional shop. But in keeping with their whole theme of overall creativity, artists and designers will still be encouraged to display their latest work, with an exhibition of Emergency Blanket sculptures kicking things off from tomorrow (Friday 22nd June).

The exterior to Primitive London Dalston

The aforementioned TEN collaboration sees the store in partnership with London College of Fashion alumni Nadir Tejani, who specialises in enigmatic looking menswear that cloaks the wearer in intricate, dark coloured drapery. Tejani  describes his pieces as being  more concerned with function than aesthetics, and cryptically says that he designs for ‘people who see clothes as an eco-system’

Fortunately for those of us who like our wardrobe staples a little more clear-cut, the TEN collaboration focuses on highly functional casual wear - an aseasonal collection of everyday individual pieces that can be layered up for an architectural silhouette.

Cleverly, the products have been created and named after their pattern structure, with #1 made from one pattern, and #10 made from ten, and reference 20th century workmen wear, with details refined down to the easiest and most practical options. In a similar sentiment, colours and materials have also been kept super modest, with a palette of black shades, and only two simple fabrics used – a structured, stiff cotton, and a light-weight polyester-cotton blend, which between them, work for any situation.

The collection was met with delight at an in-store launch last night. Stay tuned for pictures of how it went down…
